the Selarón Steps by Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón

Most things throughout history begin with & become the results of one person's idea & work!
Do you wonder where you are in that picture?  You never know how much you might affect other people's lives.

The Wikipedia information is very interesting, but the address is too long to attach it as a link.  Either copy & paste, or type Selaron Steps into a search bar & click on the Wikipedia link.  But do read of his struggles.

Immediately recognizable was this "scallop (sea)shell" symbol (blue & gold) for The Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail across northern Spain which we learned about in the movie, "The Way."  As a result, our son took a summer & hiked over 400 miles of it in 4-5 weeks, & we all began to learn about famous hiking trails around the world.  It was a fantastic trip!  Again, "we" got to travel it through photos :), realizing our blessings with cell phones & WhatsApp today.  It sure is a long way from the days (time & costs) of film & developing!!

Historic Site of Rio's Original Slave Market

Over 500,000 slaves landed here according to the plaque.  That's here in Rio, let alone in Salvador, the major slave importing center of the country from what I've read so far.  This slave market area was filled in, in 1911.  Exactly a century later, in 2011, during the dig for a re-urbanization project, this site was uncovered.  Today it's a protected monument of the Archeological Circuit Celebrating African Heritage.

My "personal" comment:  I wish that whatever is behind the "Black Movement" in this country, the focus would be more like in Brazil, . . . instead of anger fueling destruction of our cities by a horrible incident of one person or small group of people, . . . the focus would be to give honor by more "landmarks, which are done in a multitude of ways," to those of the Afro-American history/heritage/culture which helped build this country.  And let's remember . . . it's not only Blacks who are, in numbers, a minority group in the USA.  We have over 120 languages represented just here, in the Omaha public schools!  So even though people were oppressed ~~~ & that doesn't exclude the "white" man in this country, & as if it was only the Blacks, but the American Indian, immigrants of Chinese, Japanese, & other Asian lineages, plus people seeking freedom (especially indentured servants) from dozens of other countries, ~~~ we should be learning MORE history from early on, & celebrating the benefits which have come about for ALL of us who were born in this country, and give thanks to the Lord for it.  Leave the statues & symbols up in order to learn the good AND the bad from them.  Some years ago I read that our enemy is ignorance, and I know that has put many of the last 25 years of school children educated in public schools, in a mental prison of ignorance. "End of sermon, or it will be a chapter!!!" Amen

The reason I believe it's important to say something like the above is that statistics say that out of every 20+ people taken out of Africa & put into slavery, 1 went to the United States, and 20 (YES, 20) WENT TO BRAZIL.

Form the internet:  "On May 13, 1888, Brazilian Princess Isabel of Bragança signed Imperial Law number 3,353. Although it contained just 18 words, it is one of the most important pieces of legislation in Brazilian history. Called the 'Golden Law,' it abolished slavery in all its forms."

The Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading

Some of the information on internet sources between this and the National Library of Brazil is misleading as to which one is which.  Many "tourists" speak of THIS library (referred to as the most beautiful) as the "National" one, and thus, the misrepresentation of info between the two.  It's not for me to do another hour of "discovery" as to the facts of each & figure out the truth, as you can "google search."  Just enjoy the beauty of this place!

The Bustling Neighborhood

Again, for me, it was a "hot" walk of a few long city blocks, but eventually I made it even with quick stops to take photos!  The vendor of the fruit stand seemed to be napping.  Then if you're looking for a DVD ~ (1,000s).  The guy with the sand business (probably for making cement) was sitting on a stool eating lunch - we smiled & waved.  Then there's a Brazilian lunch-food-type restaurant, comparable to all of our hamburger fast foods.

Colombo's for lunch

Classified as a coffeehouse in downtown Rio de Janeiro, it's said to be "one of the 10 most beautiful cafes in the world."  The reasonable food prices don't reflect that ambience ~ basic & good food, plus a dessert :).

Opening up the world to different cultures, but remembering all of us were created by God.

Information

This is the 7th in a series of connected "Visiting Brazil" websites using Webnode's "free" website offer (with limited space which photos, vs. text, use up very rapidly). Having had a limited knowledge of life in Brazil (only knowing of the Amazon, jungles, & the Jesus statue), I made this website series to share our March/April 2023, month-long trip, for your enjoyment, enlightenment, and educational benefit to expand our South American cultural awareness.
